MUSE SCORE

http://musescore.org

Free, downloadable music composition software (the look is similar to Sibelius). The coolest feature of this program is the score-sharing feature, in which students can share final compositions within the class.

HOOKPAD

A visually appealing and user-friendly interface to compose, analyze, and playback original pieces. There is a tutorial, but exploring the site is almost as fun as composing. The student can add lyrics, utilize solfege or keyboard, analyze chord structures in multiple inversions, and much more. The free version can save the file as a URL, embed, or be made public on the Hookpad site.

No download required for this online music composition platform. Not the most intuitive software, but again makes in-class score sharing possible. Free registration is required for sharing.
